(1) Determining anatomically-relevant bone-to-bone orientations in the foot based on in-vivo 3D imaging (all current projects use CT scans). (2) Relating abnormal bone-to-bone orientations to dynamic foot function, especially plantar pressures in diabetics with Charcot-related fixed deformities. (3) Quantifying geometric bone strength parameters in foot bones as an index of fracture risk. Current focus is on indices of bending strength metatarsals (esp. 2,3, & 5). Also assessing whole-bone and sub-regional BMD in all tarsals. (4) Developing techniques to estimate bone stresses in foot bones using image-based geometric strength indices and biomechanical loads derived from plantar pressure measurement and gait analysis.
